behind the scenes: collections and conservation fossil at efm

A Window Into Ancient Worlds

Every fossil has a story to tell, and our Collections & Conservation team is helping uncover the secrets of our planet’s ancient past!

At Edelman Fossil Park & Museum, we work to preserve these incredible pieces of prehistory for generations to come. Most of the fossils prepared and studied here come directly from our Quarry, located just outside the museum. This extraordinary fossil bed has yielded more than 100,000 fossils representing over 100 species, including animals that lived during the time of the asteroid impact off the Yucatán Peninsula that led to the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. This makes our Quarry an exceptionally rare and scientifically important site, offering a remarkable glimpse into life before and after one of Earth’s most pivotal events. Our collections also feature incredible donated specimens, including dinosaur bones and other extraordinary fossil discoveries.

Visitors can explore these fascinating finds up close and even watch paleontologists at work as they carefully prepare, study, and preserve these remarkable pieces of Earth’s history.
