  4. Time: 7:30–11:00 AM (guided programs), self-led observations all day

  5. Location: Museum grounds

  6. Target: 1,000+ total observations in the museum’s iNaturalist project



  7. Join us for the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum Bioblitz! On Sunday, September 28th, help us discover the incredible biodiversity of our museum grounds. From 7:30–11:00 AM, join guided walks with our staff and local experts to explore birds, bugs, plants, and more—or wander the property on your own to record species sightings. Every observation you upload to iNaturalist brings us closer to our goal of 1,000 observations!


  8. This family-friendly event also features kids’ activities like outdoor storytime and coloring stations, plus an iNaturalist help desk for new users. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just curious about what’s living around us, your discoveries matter!


  9. 📱 Bring a smartphone or camera to document your finds.

  10. 🌿 Open to all ages- sign up in advance or drop in on the day.

  12. Goals

  13. • Increase total museum iNaturalist observations from 650 to over 1,000 in one day.

  14. • Engage the local community in hands-on citizen science.

  15. • Foster awareness of biodiversity within the museum’s property.



  16. Participation Rules

  17. • Any species (plants, fungi, insects, birds, mammals, etc.) observed on museum property counts.

  18. • Observations must have:

  19. • A clear photo uploaded to iNaturalist.

  20. • Accurate location tagging.

  21. • Observations should be uploaded the same day, but participants may finish uploads at home.




  22. Schedule of Events


  23. 7:30 AM – Check-in begins


  24. Guided Nature Walks (30–45 min each)
  25. 7:30 AM: Birding Blitz – led by a local birder

  26. 8:30 AM: Pollinator Patrol – insect sweep net & macro photography focus

  27. 9:30 AM: Plant & Fungi Foray – plant ID and mushroom spotting

  28. 10:30 AM: Bug Safari for Kids – short walk with nets and magnifying lenses



  29. All Morning (7:30–11:00 AM) – Ongoing Engagement In the Theater

  30. iNaturalist Help Desk – EFM staff will assist with Inaturalist identification & troubleshooting

  31. Observation Leaderboard – live update board with participant totals

  32. Kids’ Zone – outdoor storytime, nature-themed coloring pages, magnifier table


  33. All Day – Self-Led Observations


  34. Visitors can explore any open trails and habitats on their own to upload observations.
