Field Trip Information

  • Quarry Group Experience


    1. The Quarry Dig is a 75-minute guided field trip (approx. 45 minutes of digging) where students can uncover 65+ million-year-old fossils such as clam shells, fish vertebrae, shark teeth, and crocodile remnants, and take home three fossils.


    2. Requirements & Pricing: Everyone entering the quarry needs a ticket (children 2 and under are free with a paying adult). Participants under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or chaperone. Time slots are available at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 2:00, and 3:15, accommodating up to 50 participants per slot. Larger groups must reserve multiple slots.


    3. Preparation: Wear closed-toe shoes, clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen, and bring a water bottle.

  • Payment & Refunds


    1. School field trips require a 50% non-refundable deposit due one month after the invoice is received (or a signed contract/P.O. if your district policy requires). The final payment and attendance numbers are due 14 days prior to the visit date, or the reservation is subject to cancellation. No refunds are available after that time. We cannot offer refunds to guests who are sick or cancel at the last minute. If you need to pay in cash or with a check on the day of, please contact education@efm.org at least one month before your visit date to confirm.


    2. If weather conditions, including but not limited to rain, snow, extreme heat, or severe storms, significantly impact the operation of the Quarry and EFM elects to close the Quarry, guests will be given the option to reschedule their experience within six months of the scheduled experience or a full refund.

  • Chaperones & Aides


    1. One chaperone per 10 students receives free admission, and one complimentary ticket is provided for a designated therapist or personal care attendant assisting a group member during their visit.

  • Scheduling


    1. The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Weekday field trips can be booked at any time, with time slots available every 30 minutes starting at 10:00 am. Weekend and holiday visits are available for time slots after 2:00 pm.


    2. With strong interest from schools across the tri-state area and beyond, we recommend booking early. Quarry Digs and Guided Museum Tours must be reserved at least one month in advance.

  • Lunches


    1. Lunch spaces are available in 30-minute reserved slots for up to 50 students at $100 per slot. Groups are welcome to bring their own lunches, which can be stored while you explore (please note, there is no refrigeration or microwave access). Larger groups may reserve multiple time slots.

    2. For safety and logistics, a reserved lunch space is required for any group wishing to eat onsite—there are no free or outdoor picnic areas available.


    3. Food and beverages can also be purchased at our Quarry Grounds Café on the Upper Level of the Museum; however, the café has limited seating, and large groups planning to buy lunches may still need to reserve a lunch space.

  • Financial Assistance


    1. Title I schools can take advantage of our $10 per student discounted rate. One chaperone per 10 students receives free admission, and additional adults are $15 each. For booking details, please contact education@efm.org.

  • Educational Standards


    1. Our field trips align with state science standards and NGSS, and standards alignment documents are available upon request.

  • Guided Experience


    1. The general museum admission experience is primarily self-guided, but we do offer daily facilitated activities like Curiosity Club, Storytime, and Pop-Up Exploration Stations, where students can interact and ask questions.


    2. Guided Museum Tours are also available for groups of 20 people at a time for an additional $150 per tour (in addition to the group rate). Larger groups can book multiple tours, with each tour accommodating up to 20 participants. This is for the museum only and does not include the Quarry.

Homeschool Days

EFM invites homeschool families to enjoy a themed, hands-on learning experience featuring real fossils and specimens, plus full-day access to explore the museum. Each program begins at 11am and offers a new topic every visit, making it a fun and educational outing for all ages.
